Hi! Apologies for the delayed response. Alpha is the dispersion parameter and it indicates how under-dispered or over-dispersed your model assumes the data set to be.

I have updated the article showing how to calculate alpha. Incidently, statsmodels will calculate alpha for you as part of the model fitting process. Let me know if this answers your question.
